Identification: Rhinobatos
Common name: “Guitar fish”
Age: Late Cretaceous
Origin: Lebanon

This wonderful fossil is coming from the famous Lebanese site of Hgula. It lived by the coastline at low depth (between 2 and 200m) only 100 million years ago, precisely in the Cenomanian age. The presence of numerous animals, well preserved at the same level, indicates a sudden and simultaneous death probably due to a “waterbloom” (the plankton use all the oxygen in the seawater, and releases substances that poison sea animals and cause their sudden death).

Rhinobatos sp. is a so-called guitarfish with a slender shape body, slightly longer than wide with little lateral spreading. Guitarfish seem to be between sharks and rays, with an elongated tubular body and fins on the torso and tail, and a wide, flat pectoral disc at their head.
